Client 63: Perspective Is A Lovely Hand to Hold

This past Friday, we had the privilege of welcoming another incredible client into the OnRamp DFW family. While every client we serve has overcome significant obstacles, Jean’s* story left a lasting impression on all of us. And so when she and her advocate walked up to the giveaway singing hymns of praise, it was clear this would be a special morning!

Before sharing more of her journey, here’s a moment from the giveaway that captures her perspective:

“I’ve been through some hard things, but the focus of my story is about what’s ahead, not what’s behind me. I’m proud of myself, and I’m thankful to God that I’ve still got life to live.”

Over the past decade, Jean endured severe domestic abuse. After being poisoned and abandoned, she found herself alone, without a home, and facing new disabilities that made it difficult to return to the life she once knew.

That’s when her advocate, Karen, stepped in. As a property manager at an apartment complex in McKinney, Karen used her position to help Jean secure housing. More than that, she provided relational support during a critical time. That single act of generosity gave Jean the stability she needed to begin rebuilding her life.

Yet, even after securing housing and employment, transportation remained a major barrier. Getting to doctor’s appointments, church, and even the grocery store was a constant challenge.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we were able to provide Jean with a beautifully restored Toyota Camry. And that shine you see in the photos above is the result of countless hours of work by our Vehicle Team, who faithfully clean, repair, and prepare each car before it’s given away.

With reliable transportation, Jean is now able to continue her training to become a court reporter, attend medical appointments, and move forward with confidence. But what stood out most was her desire to give back. She spoke often about her dream of helping others and being someone who provides support rather than needing to ask for it.

We love that mindset! Time and again, we see that those who have experienced hardship are often the most eager to serve others. Sarah’s story is a powerful reminder that the future can hold hope, purpose, and the opportunity to make a difference.

Don’t Forget Molly!

Oh, and we had a special guest come to the giveaway! Molly the adorable dog you see sitting in Tim’s lap, is Jean’s support animal. She’s made sure to say thank you to each of us for the car too! :)
