Client 72: All The King’s Men
At every vehicle giveaway, we invite the recipient to share a few words if they'd like. Some express overwhelming joy. Others shed tears of gratitude. And every so often, someone shares a story that stays with you long after the event is over.
That was the case with Kevin, our 72nd client.
Kevin came to OnRamp DFW through the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction (APAA), a well-known recovery organization in Dallas. For many years, he struggled with addiction. There were seasons when he was winning the fight—and seasons when addiction was winning.
As Kevin began sharing his story with us, he opened with these words:
"Ten years ago, I wanted to live and I wanted to die, and I didn't know how to do either. That's when I got in contact with APAA."
That moment marked the beginning of a completely new chapter.
Through a supportive recovery community, specialized addiction care, and the accountability of dedicated mentors, Kevin began building the life he had always hoped for but never thought was possible.
A central part of Kevin's recovery journey was his faith. During the recovery process, he became a Christian and found hope through the grace and forgiveness of Jesus, along with the brotherhood of the men in his recovery program. He shared that it was God and his house brothers who gave him the courage to believe that a new life was possible.
Kevin compared his story to Humpty Dumpty—but with a very different ending. He told us:
"Jesus is the King of my life. I was like Humpty Dumpty; I had a great, great fall. But all the King's horses and all the King's men put me back together again."
On giveaway day, Kevin was surrounded by friends, mentors, and fellow members of his recovery community as he received the keys to his Honda Fit. One of our favorite details is that Kevin already knew how to drive a manual transmission, and a manual Honda Fit became available just as we were searching for the right vehicle for him. The timing couldn't have been better.
Reliable transportation will allow Kevin to get to doctor's appointments, run everyday errands, and continue investing in the community that helped change his life. At Souls Harbor, his recovery home, having personal transportation allows Kevin to keep serving in multiple leadership roles, including intake manager, medication administrator, AA/NA sponsor, and mentor to other men beginning their own recovery journeys!
We are so humbled to get to play a small part in what God is doing to bring new life to people in our community!
