Client 78: Different Faiths, Shared Community
Yusra came to the United States as a Syrian refugee years ago, leaving behind her home, friends, resources, and the life she knew to start over. Yet for years after arriving in the States, much of her life was spent under the control of an abusive husband. After eventually separating from him, she found herself facing the difficult task of rebuilding her life once again. She needed a safe place to live, a job, and a path toward becoming financially independent.
That is when her advocate, Ruba, from American Islamic Diversity, stepped in.
Ruba helped Yusra find work at a restaurant in Allen and even welcomed her into her home while she got back on her feet. She drove Yusra to and from work, helped her create a budget, and walked alongside her as she began paying down debt and saving for an apartment of her own.
Over the following months, Yusra made remarkable progress.
She learned to drive and earned her Texas driver's license. She eventually moved into her first apartment on her own. Her English improved as she worked alongside English-speaking coworkers, and she grew increasingly confident in her ability to build a life of her own.
But there was still one significant obstacle: transportation.
Without a reliable vehicle, maintaining steady employment and continuing to build her independence was difficult. So when Yusra was nominated to receive a vehicle through OnRamp DFW, we were honored to be part of the next step in her journey.
Giveaway Day
On giveaway day, we got to hand Yusra the keys to a beautiful, bright turquoise-blue Honda Fit. (Probably the most colorful vehicle we’ve ever given away!)
It was a beautiful moment, but what made this giveaway especially meaningful was the partnership behind it.
Yusra and Ruba are some of our Muslim neighbors, while OnRamp DFW is an openly Christian organization. We recognize that there are meaningful differences between our faiths. Yet, during the giveaway, Ruba and Yusra expressed something that captured the heart of the day: even when we disagree about matters of faith, it is beautiful that we can work together to care for neighbors in need in our community.
We could not agree more.
As we celebrated Yusra receiving her vehicle, we had the opportunity to talk about why we do what we do. At OnRamp DFW, we believe everyone is made in the image of God and that Jesus has shown us the grace and love of God by giving Himself for us. We want that same grace and love to shape the way we serve our neighbors.
A gifted vehicle is a practical way we can do that.
We are grateful for Ruba and the many advocates who walk alongside their neighbors long before they ever arrive at an OnRamp giveaway.
Additionally, we are especially grateful for all volunteers and donors who make it possible for OnRamp DFW to continue serving more people like Yusra. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus to all who are in need.
